Acura's Leap Forward: The 2013 Acura RLX Concept

The stage was set at the New York International Auto Show where Acura unveiled the blueprint for their next flagship sedan - the Acura RLX Concept. The car is expected to hit showrooms in early 2013, epitomizing Acura's progressive approach towards technological innovation, luxury, and comfort, while maintaining a balanced design and compact dimensions.

Powertrain and Performance

The Acura RLX Concept revealed an impressive powertrain comprising a new 3.5L direct-injected VTEC V-6 engine alongside a Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system. This hybrid system brings together three electric motors to produce over 370 horsepower. Coupled with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) and a lightweight body, the RLX Concept strives to bridge the gap between V-8 power and four-cylinder efficiency. Furthermore, an EPA estimated rating of 30 mpg in the city, highway, and combined asserts a considerable leap in Acura's fuel economy portfolio.

Acura has also hinted at a 310-horsepower, front-wheel-drive version of the RLX that would feature the brand's new Precision All Wheel Steer technology for enhanced handling.

Design and Styling

The RLX Concept car showcases Acura's evolved 'Keen Edge' design language. Its proportions suggest a midsize luxury sedan while providing the interior space of a larger class. Notable aspects include a two-inch longer wheelbase, two-inch shorter front overhang, and an increased track and vehicle width by approximately two inches, which contribute to its balanced appearance.

Distinctly, the Concept model debuts Acura's Jewel Eye LED headlamps, a high-intensity, dual-stacked array that ensures powerful illumination while enhancing the car's aesthetic appeal with a unique, bright-eyed look.

Body and Chassis

Emphasizing its lightweight approach, the RLX Concept employs high-strength steel and aluminum to achieve a rigid yet light body design. Furthermore, the sophisticated combination of double wishbone front suspension, multi-link rear suspension, Amplitude Reactive Dampers, and electronic power steering with variable gear ratio promises precise and intuitive handling control.

Front-wheel-drive variants of the RLX will utilize Acura's all-new Precision All Wheel Steer system, providing independent control of the steering angle for the right and left rear wheels. All-wheel-drive RLX models will also incorporate the Sport-Hybrid SH-AWD for enhanced cornering control and steering precision.

Safety

Acura has packed the RLX Concept with a host of active and passive safety features including a Collision Mitigation Braking System and the first application of Acura's Lane Keep Assist System. The sedan also incorporates Acura's second-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure for improved frontal crash energy management.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Acura's RLX Concept attempts to redefine in-car communication and entertainment technologies, featuring intuitive and easy-to-operate controls. Dual LCD screens, a new AcuraLink Communication System, and a high-end, 14-speaker ultra-premium audio system stand out in the cabin's feature list. The RLX will also integrate smart phone functions, provide for easy two-way communication, and offer an Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition. With all these features, Acura appears committed to delivering a high level of connectivity and infotainment that matches the expectations of modern luxury buyers.

Conclusion: Concept or Reality?

The 2013 Acura RLX Concept certainly seems to embody Acura's relentless pursuit of technological innovation, luxury, and performance, packaged in a well-designed sedan. However, as always with concept vehicles, the real test will be in the transition from a concept to a production model. Will all these innovative features and performance capabilities make it to the production RLX? We will have to wait until 2013 to find out.
