2027 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Makes Luxury More Visible

The 2027 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class receives the broadest revision of the current-generation flagship yet, although this is a substantial update rather than a clean-sheet replacement. Mercedes has reworked the exterior lighting, cabin materials, infotainment architecture, driver-assistance hardware, suspension and engine lineup. The U.S. will again get two all-wheel-drive versions, the V8-powered Maybach S 580 and the V12 Mercedes-Maybach S 680. Pricing has not been announced, nor has Mercedes released EPA fuel-economy estimates.

A More Ornate Take on the S-Class

The underlying proportions remain familiar. At 215.9 inches long with a 133.7-inch wheelbase, the 2027 Maybach S-Class continues to stretch the traditional S-Class sedan shape into something closer to a formal limousine. The long rear doors, substantial C-pillars and gently descending roofline give it presence without disturbing the basic elegance of the standard Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Mercedes has nevertheless made the Maybach much harder to overlook. Its reshaped grille is 20 percent larger and now has an illuminated frame, along with softly lit Maybach lettering incorporated into the grille itself. The Maybach badge on each C-pillar also lights up, while buyers can order an illuminated standing Mercedes-Benz hood ornament. The S 680 adds its own grille emblem to distinguish the V12 model.

The larger grille works with the upright nose, but it also pushes the car closer to visual excess. Mercedes describes the effect as understated authority, though glowing badges, a lighted hood ornament and an enlarged chrome grille are not especially discreet. Still, the details have been integrated carefully rather than attached as obvious afterthoughts.

New twin-star headlights use small rose-gold accents, while the lower front air inlets carry a repeating Maybach pattern in polished chrome. Projectors in the side sills cast the Maybach name onto the pavement when passengers enter or leave. At the back, star-shaped elements appear inside the revised taillights, and Mercedes has split the trunk-lid handle strip between chrome and gloss black finishes.

The broader array of lighting elements are likely to divide opinion, especially for buyers who prefer the quieter appearance traditionally associated with chauffeured sedans. In profile, however, the Maybach remains restrained and well balanced. Its long wheelbase and relatively simple body sides do most of the visual work.

New Wheels and a Darker Night Series

Mercedes offers 20- and 21-inch forged wheel designs for the updated sedan. A new 20-inch polished wheel takes a traditional multi-spoke approach, while an optional 21-inch MANUFAKTUR wheel adds gold-colored highlights. Silver-finish forged wheels receive a self-leveling center cap mounted on a ball-bearing assembly, keeping the Mercedes star upright while the wheel rotates. It is an almost comically specific detail, but this is precisely the sort of engineering flourish that belongs on a Maybach.

The Night Series Package returns alongside a new Night Series Exterior Package. Available finishes include gray, black and white shades, an Obsidian Black and Mojave Silver two-tone combination, and newly added Nautical Blue. Dark chrome exterior trim replaces some of the brighter ornamentation. Full Night Series models can pair the exterior with either MANUFAKTUR Night Series Black Pearl leather or Deep White and Black Pearl Exclusive Nappa leather, both detailed with gold-gray piping.

The Rear Cabin Still Gets Priority

Mercedes redesigned the interior from the steering wheel through the center console, but the rear compartment remains the defining part of the 2027 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. First-class executive rear seats, extensive sound insulation and available power-operated rear doors aim to separate passengers from the commotion outside. The comfort doors can open or close from a button or through the MBUX interface. Mercedes includes them as standard on the Maybach S 680 and offers them on the S 580.

The front center console now incorporates a revised phone cradle with wireless charging. A larger decorative surround frames it, with finishes including new Natural Grain Brown Amber Wood arranged in a herringbone pattern. The combination of real wood, leather and metal provides a useful counterweight to the amount of glass spreading across the dashboard.

Rear passengers get two purpose-shaped cupholders in the center console. They can hold the optional silver-plated champagne flutes made by Robbe & Berking, an accessory Mercedes has offered on the Maybach S-Class since 2002. An optional refrigerated compartment sits behind the rear armrest. Taken together with the reclining executive seats, power sunshades and powered doors, the rear cabin functions more like a private lounge than a conventional second row.

Mercedes has added Beech Brown, Lake Green, Corn Yellow and Tobacco Brown to the interior color catalog. Active Ambient Lighting uses 199 LEDs and provides 10 coordinated lighting themes plus 64 individually selectable colors. Maybach-specific choices include Rose Gold and Amethyst Glow. The lighting can respond to spoken instructions, climate settings and driver-assistance warnings rather than functioning only as decoration.

The cabin still seats five according to the technical specifications, even though its layout and available equipment clearly place greater importance on the two outer rear positions. Trunk volume measures 12.3 cubic feet in the S 580 and 12.1 cubic feet in the S 680. Neither figure is generous for such a large sedan, particularly when the refrigerated compartment and rear-seat amenities enter the equation.

MB.OS Reaches Maybach for the First Time

The 2027 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class becomes the first Maybach model to use the Mercedes-Benz Operating System, or MB.OS. It supports the fourth generation of MBUX and can receive over-the-air software updates for vehicle systems, not merely infotainment applications.

A standard MBUX Superscreen places a 14.4-inch central touchscreen and 12.3-inch front-passenger screen under one uninterrupted glass panel. A separate 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster sits in front of the driver and includes a standard three-dimensional display mode. Maybach-specific graphics use rose-gold dials, a gold Maybach emblem between the gauges and a textured background combining gold, rose gold and black.

The Superscreen modernizes the dashboard, although it also gives the front cabin the screen-heavy character now common across the Mercedes lineup. The distinctive materials and trim prevent it from feeling identical to a regular S-Class, but buyers who prefer dedicated switches will still find much of the interaction concentrated on touch surfaces.

Mercedes has revised the MBUX Zero Layer so it can display context-sensitive information, suggested functions and recently used applications without forcing the user through several menus. Owners can move apps and organize them into folders, much like they would on a smartphone.

The MBUX Virtual Assistant uses several generative-AI systems, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing Search and Google Gemini. It supports more involved conversations and retains short-term context so occupants do not need to repeat the subject with every request. An animated Mercedes star appears on the Zero Layer as the assistant’s avatar, finished in Maybach-specific rose gold.

Rear Entertainment Becomes Standard Equipment

Two 13.1-inch rear displays come standard as part of the MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment system. Each screen has a newly designed, individually configurable remote control. Rear passengers can use the remotes to operate entertainment functions, climate settings, power sunshades and other comfort features without reaching toward the display.

Integrated cameras in the rear screens support video conferencing through compatible connected services. That feature fits the Maybach’s business-class mission, though the screens remain visibly mounted to the front seatbacks rather than being fully concealed in the cabin architecture.

A Reworked V8 and a U.S.-Market V12

The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 uses an extensively revised version of the company’s M177 twin-turbocharged V8. The 3,982-cc engine produces 530 horsepower between 5,500 and 6,100 rpm, along with 553 pound-feet of torque from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. Its 83.0-mm bore and 92.0-mm stroke accompany a 10.5:1 compression ratio.

A second-generation integrated starter-generator provides up to 23 hp and 151 lb-ft of electrical assistance. The mild-hybrid system smooths restarts, fills small gaps in power delivery and recovers energy while slowing. Mercedes also fits two Lanchester balance shafts to reduce vibration. The manufacturer revised the V8 with future emissions requirements in mind, though it has not provided U.S. efficiency figures.

Mercedes estimates that the 5,335-pound 2027 Maybach S 580 will reach 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Its electronically governed top speed is 130 mph. Those figures are striking for a sedan measuring nearly 18 feet long, even if rapid acceleration is secondary to the powertrain’s smoothness in this application.

The Mercedes-Maybach S 680 retains a handcrafted 5,980-cc V12 for the United States and a limited number of other markets. It develops 621 hp from 5,100 to 5,500 rpm and 664 lb-ft between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. The 12-cylinder engine has an 82.6-mm bore, 93.0-mm stroke and 9.0:1 compression ratio.

Despite the V12’s additional output, Mercedes estimates a slower 4.3-second run to 60 mph. Top speed remains limited to 130 mph. Curiously, the published curb weight for the S 680 is 5,280 pounds, 55 pounds less than the S 580. The V12’s appeal here is not about winning a stoplight contest. It lies in its low-rpm torque, smooth delivery and rarity in a market that has largely abandoned 12-cylinder sedans.

Both versions use 4MATIC all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The shared transmission has forward ratios of 5.35, 3.24, 2.25, 1.64, 1.21, 1.00, 0.87, 0.72 and 0.60, plus a 4.80 reverse ratio. Additional insulation targets powertrain noise and vibration, while a dedicated MAYBACH drive mode prioritizes gentle responses and rear-seat ride comfort.

Predictive Air Suspension Watches the Road Ahead

AIRMATIC air suspension comes standard on both versions, now with predictive damping informed by Car-to-X data. Mercedes vehicles traveling ahead can relay information about road conditions to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud. The Maybach then adjusts its dampers before reaching the reported disturbance. The arrangement depends on available vehicle data, but it gives the suspension another source of information beyond the sedan’s own sensors.

Mercedes uses speed-sensitive electromechanical power steering across the range. The S 580 has 14.7-inch ventilated and perforated front brake discs, while the S 680 increases the front diameter to 15.4 inches. Both models use 14.2-inch ventilated rear discs.

The two versions share a 40.7-foot wall-to-wall turning circle. Front track width measures 65.2 inches, with 66.3 inches at the rear. Those numbers underline the car’s considerable size, although the parking technology should make it less intimidating in confined spaces.

More Computing Power for Driver Assistance

A new water-cooled central computer supports the 2027 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class driver-assistance and parking systems. Mercedes says the hardware also carries enough processing reserve for later functions delivered through software updates.

MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO comes standard as a Digital Extra, bundling the sedan’s main driving-assistance features. Mercedes has not described the system here as a substitute for an attentive driver, and the branding alone does not establish an autonomous-driving capability. A planned CITY PRO function is intended to provide more continuous point-to-point assistance through dense urban traffic. It will not be active at launch and is scheduled to arrive later through an over-the-air update.

Standard MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST can identify parking spaces on either side of the vehicle more quickly than before. It can also help pull out of a space even when the driver parked the car manually. MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 360 and a 360-degree camera system also come standard, providing multiple surround-view perspectives.

A Rim Protection Warning adds a top-down distance display intended to reduce the chance of scraping the forged wheels against curbs or nearby obstacles. It sounds minor beside a supercomputer and AI assistant, but avoiding damage to an optional 21-inch MANUFAKTUR wheel may be one of the more immediately appreciated functions.

MANUFAKTUR Expands Beyond the Usual Catalog

Mercedes says nearly every Maybach S-Class receives at least some MANUFAKTUR content, with the typical customer choosing three personalized elements. For the updated model, the standard personalization catalog encompasses more than 150 exterior paint colors and over 400 interior shades.

Two new exterior finishes join the selection. MANUFAKTUR Black Sparkling uses glass flakes in the clearcoat to create a fine shimmer, while MANUFAKTUR Verde Silver Magno provides a matte green-silver appearance. Buyers can also specify the new 21-inch multi-spoke forged wheels with gold accents.

Four additional two-color interior combinations pair black with Carmine Red, Lake Green, Corn Yellow or Tobacco Brown. Each uses Exclusive Nappa leather with Maybach’s interlocking-circle pattern. These combinations sit alongside the broader range of leather, wood, embroidery, stitching and trim choices.

The new MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure service pushes beyond the regular catalog. Customers can select from hundreds of historical Mercedes-Benz and Maybach paint shades, a large library of leathers and different decorative-stitch colors. The program can also consider requests outside the published selection, allowing the company’s specialists to develop additional finishes or cabin details for an individual commission.

That degree of choice has practical value at this end of the market. A Maybach shares its core architecture with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, so unusual materials, colors and hand-finished details help establish more separation than another badge or illuminated emblem can manage.

Full-Size Sedan Dimensions

Both 2027 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class variants measure 215.9 inches long, 75.6 inches wide and 59.4 inches tall. Each has four doors, an official five-passenger capacity and a 20.1-gallon fuel tank. The long 133.7-inch wheelbase devotes substantial space to the rear compartment.

The S 580 provides 12.3 cubic feet of luggage room, compared with 12.1 cubic feet for the S 680. Mercedes lists curb weights of 5,335 and 5,280 pounds, respectively. The automaker has not announced payload ratings, EPA range estimates or fuel-economy numbers.

Built at Mercedes Factory 56

Series production began in April 2026 at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen, Germany. The facility dates to 1915, while the Factory 56 assembly building opened in 2020 with a focus on flexible production, digital manufacturing tools and improved efficiency.

Customers can configure their cars through the Center of Excellence at Sindelfingen. The neighboring MANUFAKTUR workshop prepares individualized components, and the MANUFAKTUR Studio allows clients to follow the development of their commissions. Mercedes places the updated car within a broader anniversary year, marking 140 years since the automobile’s invention and 105 years of Maybach history in 2026.

A Flagship That No Longer Whispers

The 2027 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class preserves the qualities that matter most to its audience: a vast rear compartment, strong noise isolation, air suspension, executive seating and a choice between V8 and V12 power. Its most meaningful changes sit beneath the decorative surface, particularly MB.OS, the revised V8, predictive damping and the more capable parking hardware.

The design takes a less reserved path. A larger grille, illuminated Maybach branding, rose-gold headlight details and star motifs at both ends make this flagship more conspicuous than before. Some buyers will find that appropriate for a Maybach, while others may prefer the cleaner restraint of the underlying Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Either way, the 2027 update draws a clearer line between the two sedans, even before a buyer begins working through hundreds of MANUFAKTUR choices.

U.S. prices, option costs and a detailed on-sale schedule remain unannounced. The S 580 should offer the more technically modern powertrain and the quicker acceleration estimate, while the S 680 preserves the uncommon appeal of a V12. In this part of the market, that distinction matters more than the four-tenths separating their 0-to-60-mph times.
