2027 Honda Passport TrailSport Gets More Than a Lift

Honda is giving the 2027 Passport TrailSport a substantial chassis revision, not just another round of outdoor-themed trim. Ground clearance rises to 9.65 inches, and the work extends well beyond taller springs. Both the TrailSport and TrailSport Elite also gain exterior changes, while Honda makes its TrailWatch camera system and a heated steering wheel standard throughout the TrailSport range. U.S. dealerships will begin receiving the updated SUVs in September 2026.

A Suspension Overhaul Beneath the Extra Height

The 2027 Honda Passport TrailSport gains 1.38 inches of ground clearance over its 2026 counterpart, which offered 8.27 inches. That increase improves all three principal clearance angles. Approach and departure angles each climb from 23 to 25 degrees, while the breakover angle increases from 20 to 23 degrees. The latter change gives the Passport more room beneath its middle when crossing a crest.

Honda says the new clearance figure exceeds those of the Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road, Subaru Outback Wilderness and Ford Bronco Sport Badlands Sasquatch. That is a useful comparison, although one measurement does not establish an overall ranking of off-road ability.

The engineering behind the lift deserves more attention than the number alone. Honda changed 28 suspension and related chassis parts, redesigning nearly 70% of the major suspension components. Those changes cover the springs, dampers, control arms, stabilizer bars and knuckles. Engineers also revised the front driveshafts and front subframe to accommodate the additional height and wheel travel while maintaining appropriate suspension geometry.

Along with the improved clearance angles, Honda reports greater articulation and better ride quality over rough terrain. The company also says it sharpened steering feedback and response on pavement. In other words, the chassis work addresses how the SUV moves, not simply how high it sits. Honda now considers the 2027 Passport TrailSport and TrailSport Elite its most capable off-road SUVs to date.

A Broader Stance and a Little More Amber

The Passport already favors upright surfaces and squared-off corners over the softer shapes common among family SUVs. For 2027, larger-looking front and rear fender flares reinforce that approach, while a reshaped lower front fascia accompanies the increased ride height. The broad grille, rectangular headlight outlines and blunt nose give the TrailSport a deliberately substantial appearance.

Honda adds two amber LED lights within the hood scoop, matching the color of the daytime running lights. The extra lighting feels a little ornamental, but the taller stance and more prominent wheel arches give the design changes a mechanical foundation. At the rear, vertical taillights and widely spaced Passport lettering maintain the same straightforward, blocky theme.

The optional Blackout Package remains available across the TrailSport range. It now adds black treatment to the front and rear lower fascias and skid garnishes, coordinating with the package’s black 18-inch alloy wheels and Honda badges. These appearance changes should not be confused with a newly announced upgrade to underbody protection.

Honda also replaces Obsidian Blue Pearl with Smoke Blue Pearl across all Passport trims. The color first appeared on the 2026 Honda Pilot, giving buyers another option beyond the usual grayscale choices.

Useful Equipment Moves Beyond the Elite

There's two useful equipment changes for buyers who skip the TrailSport Elite. Honda now includes both TrailWatch and a heated steering wheel on every Passport TrailSport trim, removing their previous restriction to the more expensive Elite.

TrailWatch supplies front, rear, side and 360-degree camera views, with graphics that help drivers judge tire placement. Its practical value comes when the hood or terrain blocks the view immediately around the vehicle. A blind rise, a deep rut or a narrow trail edge can leave a driver guessing about wheel position, even when the obstacle itself looks manageable.

The cabin takes a calmer approach than the exterior. A wide, horizontal dashboard, a freestanding center screen and rectangular vents keep the layout visually organized. Physical climate controls sit below the display, and a push-button gear selector leaves room for cupholders and storage on the broad center console. The heated steering wheel is a modest addition, but one that owners can appreciate without leaving pavement.

HTX Adds a Digital Trail Log

Honda launched its Honda Trail Experience app, or HTX, in summer 2026. The free Apple App Store download serves owners of 2026 and 2027 TrailSport versions of the Passport, Pilot and CR-V. Honda’s U.S. engineers developed it with feedback from more than 1,500 owners of the 2026 Passport TrailSport.

The app displays real-time information that goes considerably beyond vehicle speed. Drivers can access elevation, pitch, roll, brake pressure, throttle position, engine temperature, outside temperature and tire angle, along with latitude and longitude. Those readings provide additional context for the vehicle’s position and operation while navigating uneven terrain.

HTX also uses an iPhone’s camera and microphone to record video with sound, and it supports still photography. Users can export recordings with synchronized vehicle data, maps and performance overlays. That combines the trail footage and its accompanying measurements in one shareable record rather than leaving owners to assemble them separately.

V6 Power and Alabama Production

A 3.5-liter V6 powers the 2027 Honda Passport. Honda has not detailed 2027 pricing, horsepower and torque ratings, or 0-60 mph and top-speed figures for this update. The announced changes concentrate on the chassis, styling and equipment rather than a new engine.

That keeps the Passport on a different path from Honda’s electric Prologue and hybrid versions of the Accord, Civic, Prelude and CR-V. Honda’s broader SUV family also includes the smaller HR-V and the Pilot, while the Passport’s latest investment focuses specifically on off-pavement use.

Honda designed the fourth-generation Passport in California and developed it at the Honda Automotive Development Center in Ohio. The Honda Alabama Auto Plant in Lincoln exclusively builds the Passport lineup, including the TrailSport models, using U.S. and imported components. The same complex manufactures the SUV’s V6.

The Alabama plant also serves as the exclusive production site for the Honda Ridgeline pickup, Odyssey minivan and Pilot SUV. It reaches its 25th anniversary in October 2026. Since 2001, Honda has built more than 10.5 million light trucks in the United States, including over 6.5 million in Alabama.

Honda placed five vehicles in the top 10 of the 2026 Cars.com American-Made Index, more than any other automaker. The Alabama-built Passport, Ridgeline and Odyssey were among them. According to Honda, vehicles from that factory have earned 44 top-10 appearances during the index’s 21-year history, the highest total for any assembly plant.

TrailSport Has Become the Main Attraction

The timing of this update reflects how much the TrailSport versions matter to Passport sales. The fourth-generation SUV arrived in early 2025 and has since recorded several sales milestones. As of June 2026, TrailSport variants accounted for more than 80% of Passport sales, making them the dominant part of the lineup rather than a small specialty offering.

Honda also plans to export the Passport TrailSport Elite to Japan in early 2027. That gives the Alabama-built SUV a role beyond its primary U.S. market and adds a distinctly American-developed product to Honda’s Japanese lineup.

The Hardware Matters Most

The most consequential part of the 2027 Honda Passport TrailSport update sits underneath the body. Revised geometry, additional wheel travel and better clearance angles give the lift more substance than a change in stance alone. Standard TrailWatch access also puts a relevant off-road tool within reach of buyers who do not need the Elite. The extra amber lights draw attention, but the suspension work gives this update its purpose. Pricing remains the missing piece for shoppers comparing the two TrailSport trims.
