2021 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Unveiled with Striking Design Updates

The Chevrolet brand has given its midsize truck franchise a fresh face, with the 2021 Colorado model set to take center stage. This updated Colorado iteration first broke cover at the 2019 Method Race Wheels Laughlin Desert Classic, steered by Hall Racing. It then moved on to grace the SEMA show in Las Vegas, making its mark in the midsize truck market.

New Visual Enhancements and Trim Level Differentiation

Chevrolet has taken a noteworthy step in distinguishing between its various Colorado trim levels, featuring a new "Sand Dune Metallic" exterior paint option exclusively available on the Z71 and ZR2 models. These revamped vehicles now don revised front Chevy "bowtie" emblems and embossed "Chevrolet" tailgates, replacing the traditional rear Chevy bowtie. As Bob Krapes, Director of Marketing at Chevrolet Trucks, stated, the goal is for the Colorado to embody a "more aggressive appearance" to mirror its well-recognized capability.

The updates are not limited to the higher-end models; the WT, LT, and Z71 trim levels all receive renewed center bars, lower fascias, and front skid plates for the 2021 model year. While the WT and LT variants now sport all-new gold Chevy bowtie logos, the Z71 model stands out with a black bowtie logo, adding a stealthy element to its personality.

Performance-Driven Aesthetics of the ZR2 Variant

The off-road-oriented ZR2 variant makes a stronger visual statement in this model year. The ZR2 is the sole Colorado model to feature the brand-new, lettered, flow-through "Chevrolet" front fascia. This new design element aims to improve driver visibility and projects a more aggressive, almost domineering presence, further solidifying its unique position in the midsize truck segment.

Staying true to its off-road pedigree, the ZR2 comes outfitted with a host of performance-oriented features. These include the segment-exclusive Multimatic DSSVTM position-sensitive dampers, standard front and rear electronic locking differentials, a 2-inch (approximately 5 cm) suspension lift, and a 3.5-inch (approximately 9 cm) wider track. Additional off-road enhancements such as rocker protection, cast iron control arms, an Autotrac transfer case, and multiple skid plates enhance the ZR2's robustness and capability. The 2021 update also adds standard red tow hooks, contributing to both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Availability and Production

The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado, including the ZR2 variant, is expected to be available for sale within the next year. Although the pricing details remain undisclosed for now, all 2021 Colorado models are scheduled to be assembled at General Motors’ Wentzville Assembly Center in Wentzville, Missouri. With these updates, Chevrolet continues to display its relentless drive for product and feature evolution, a testament to the brand's dedication to its truck lineup.
