Unveiling the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado High Desert Package: A Convergence of Capability and Luxury

Back in 2014, Chevrolet presented a unique concept vehicle at the SEMA show, sparking intrigue among auto enthusiasts. Now, fast forward to 2017, the automaker has turned that concept into a reality. Unveiled as the Chevrolet Silverado High Desert package, this new offering is set to bring fresh content and functionality to Silverado's diverse lineup.

A Package with Various Trim Level Adaptability

The High Desert package is more than just a static addition; it's a versatile enhancement compatible with various trim levels. It can be integrated with the LT, LTZ, and the High Country trims, adding a distinctive blend of exterior refinement, a groundbreaking cargo system, and an optional Magnetic Ride Control suspension. Thus, it offers an extensive range of choices, an attribute characteristic of the Silverado series.

Combining Capability and Luxury

Chevrolet's Director of Truck Marketing, Sandor Piszar, encapsulated the essence of the High Desert package saying, it integrates "the capability and utility of Silverado with the refinement and luxury of Suburban." This seems to sum up the package quite well. It’s engineered for customers seeking the security of a lockable cargo area with the versatility of a pickup truck bed, effectively combining practicality with style.

Innovative Cargo System

At the heart of the High Desert package is an innovative cargo system that's both lockable and water-resistant, ensuring the safety and protection of your cargo against the elements. This storage system has dual side storage bins and a three-piece hard tonneau cover, providing ample space for secure storage. Inside, a cargo divider can be shifted to accommodate various sizes of items. Additionally, as with all Silverado LT, LTZ, and High Country models, the tailgate locks conveniently with a keyfob, providing security at the push of a button. For the wheel enthusiasts, the High Desert package includes 20-inch wheels for the LT trim level and 22-inch options for the LTZ and High Country trim levels.

Advanced Suspension System

Also noteworthy is the fact that the High Desert package is the first Silverado model to feature the Magnetic Ride Control suspension. This advanced system offers precise body motion control, which provides a smoother ride. It utilizes sensors to monitor road conditions every millisecond, adjusting the shock absorbers accordingly. This fine-tuning results in significant improvements in ride comfort and handling, making it a major selling point for the High Desert package.

Powerful Engine and Smooth Transmission

Powering the High Desert package is the EcoTec3 6.2L V-8 engine, available on the LTZ and High Country models. This engine, paired with the Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission, produces an SAE-certified 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque (equivalent to 624 Nm), making it the most powerful light-duty truck engine offered by Chevrolet.

Expected to hit dealerships in the fall, the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado High Desert package seems to promise a blend of rugged utility and refined luxury, bridging the gap between workhorse capability and comfortable daily driving.
