2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback: A Versatile Player in a Growing Segment

As the North American International Auto Show looms, Chevrolet's unveiling of the 2017 Cruze Hatchback warrants a closer look. This model is an expansion of the recently revamped 2016 Cruze sedan, taking its core qualities and adding a dash of functionality and a hint of sportiness. This makes it a fresh addition to the growing list of Chevrolet offerings infiltrating new market segments, alongside the Colorado and Trax.

A Closer Inspection of the 2017 Cruze Hatchback

Mirroring the sedan model's sizable 106.3-inch (or approximately 8.9-foot) wheelbase, the Cruze Hatchback's design distinguishes itself with a unique roof and an altered rear-end structure. Notable features include wraparound taillamps and a built-in spoiler perched atop the liftgate. With the liftgate opened, the hatchback offers 18.5 cubic feet (roughly equivalent to 13.9 US dry gallons) of cargo space behind the rear seats. Should you fold down the rear seat, the cargo space inflates to 47.2 cubic feet (approximately 35.5 US dry gallons).

Release Timeline

Chevrolet plans to usher the Cruze Hatchback into the market in fall 2016.

A Case for the Cruze Hatchback

Alan Batey, President of General Motors North America and Global Chevrolet, expressed optimism about the Cruze Hatchback's prospects in the US, citing a 9 percent growth in the small hatchback market last year. Batey also emphasized the Cruze's role as a global standard-bearer for Chevrolet, embodying the brand's commitment to delivering vehicles boasting cutting-edge technologies, ample features, and impressive efficiency, performance, and safety without sacrificing aesthetic appeal.

The Cruze's Foundation

Upon a brand-new, sturdier, and lighter architecture, the Cruze establishes its driving dynamics. This structural design enhances safety and efficiency, making it over 200 pounds (around 14.3 stones) lighter than its predecessor—credit goes to a body structure that has shed 100 pounds and an engine that is 44 pounds (about 3.14 stones) lighter.

The Cruze lineup in North America spans from the basic L and LS models, through the LT and up to the Premier model, which comes with an expressive RS package. This includes unique front and rear fascias, rocker panels, rear spoiler, fog lamps, and 18-inch wheels for the Premier model. The 2017 Cruze Hatchback will also be available in LT and Premier trims, and with the RS package.

Noteworthy Features of the 2017 Cruze Hatchback

The 2017 Cruze Hatchback is chock-full of standout features, marking it as a competitive force in the compact car segment. It offers segment-exclusive standard compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto via the MyLink radio systems and optional 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot. Its safety offerings exceed that of any other compact car, even besting the Corolla and Civic, with optional advanced features such as Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, and Rear Park Assist.

Under the hood, the Cruze Hatchback comes equipped with a standard 1.4L turbo engine, sporting direct injection, Stop/Start technologies, electric power steering and, in the Premier models, a Z-link rear suspension. The interior prioritizes comfort with midsize-level roominess, featuring rear legroom that outstretches both Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra by two inches.

The Cruze Hatchback doesn't skimp on the luxury touches, either. Available features encompass a heated steering wheel, heated front and rear seats, Athens leather-appointed seating surfaces, true French seams, and halogen projector-beam headlamps with LED signature lighting.

Cruze: Chevrolet's Global Favorite

Since its debut in 2008, the Cruze has grown to become Chevrolet's best-selling car worldwide, with a staggering 3.5 million units sold. In the US, the Cruze has successfully expanded Chevrolet's share of the segment from 5.8 to 9.4 percent. Interestingly, 35 percent of Cruze customers are new to Chevrolet, and among customers under 25, it's the segment’s second-best seller.
