2027 BMW X5 Spreads Its Bets

The 2027 BMW X5 arrives as a fifth-generation model with a wider brief than any X5 before it. BMW still treats the X5 as the center of its SUV universe, and for good reason: the original 1999 model helped build the company’s X family in the U.S. and gave BMW a lasting foothold in the premium midsize SUV class. This new version keeps the familiar X5 proportions, adds a much more digital cabin, and stretches the lineup across gas, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and eventually hydrogen power.

BMW Builds The New X5 Around Choice

BMW plans to start the 2027 X5 rollout with the X5 40 xDrive in October 2026. The rear-wheel-drive BMW X5 40, the BMW X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid, and the first battery-electric BMW iX5 60 xDrive follow in the first quarter of 2027. A V8-powered M Performance version joins later in 2027, while the BMW iX5 Hydrogen comes farther down the road as BMW’s first hydrogen fuel-cell production vehicle.

Pricing starts at $69,800 for the 2027 BMW X5 40 before the $1,450 destination charge, which brings the effective starting figure to $71,250. The 2027 BMW X5 40 xDrive starts at $72,100, or $73,550 with destination. The X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid opens at $77,500, or $78,950 delivered. The electric BMW iX5 60 xDrive starts at $79,800, or $81,250 after destination. Those prices place the lineup in a fairly tight band, which should make powertrain preference a bigger part of the buying decision than price alone.

BMW says this X5 can support up to five drive-system types depending on market. For the U.S., the first wave centers on six-cylinder gas power, plug-in hybrid power, and full electric drive. The hydrogen version matters from a technology standpoint, even if it will likely stay more limited than the mainstream gas and electric variants.

The 2027 BMW X5 also keeps its South Carolina connection. BMW Plant Spartanburg has built the X5 since the first generation, and the facility now adds another milestone by preparing the first all-electric X5. BMW’s nearby Woodruff battery facility will support the new iX5, and BMW says that battery site does not use fossil fuels in normal operation. For U.S. buyers, this is still one of the more locally rooted premium SUVs on sale, even as its technology comes from BMW’s global Neue Klasse program.

A Cleaner Shape With Less Swagger

The new BMW X5 does not abandon the upright SUV stance that buyers expect, but it changes the tone. The front end stands taller than before, the hood surfaces look cleaner, and the BMW badge grows larger with a matte finish. The body sides lose much of the old visual clutter. The result feels more architectural and less shouty.

That calmer look will split opinion. The 2027 BMW X5 seems to follow the wider industry drift toward SUVs that are polished rather than overtly macho. It looks a bit low on testosterone, if we’re being honest, but not necessarily in a bad way. Some older X5s had a bulldog attitude; this one carries itself more like a large, expensive appliance with gym membership. It still has size, width, and presence, yet BMW clearly dialed down some of the chest-thumping.

BMW gives the new X5 a vertically oriented kidney treatment with illuminated elements that can remain active day and night. The lighting signature uses a new double-X graphic, combining the low beams, daytime running lights, side lights, and turn signals into one unit instead of relying on a separate lens module. LED headlights with cornering lights come standard, and drivers can switch off the double-X icons if they prefer a simpler diagonal light pattern.

The front bumper changes by powertrain. Gas-powered 2027 BMW X5 models use horizontal lower intakes to give the nose a wider, more planted appearance. The BMW iX5 gets a more continuous lower apron, which gives the electric version a smoother face. BMW has learned to distinguish EVs without making them look completely unrelated, and that restraint helps here.

The approach and departure lighting sequence now involves more of the vehicle. The front and rear lights, interior lighting, exterior mirror lighting, and BMW Winglet door-handle lighting can all take part. With the optional Tech Package, the Ceremonial Light Carpet adds animated ground lighting in place of the standard static puddle light. BMW lets owners choose among RELAXED, BALANCED, and EXCITED lighting moods. I appreciate the personalization, though a luxury SUV now needing mood choreography before you even open the door does feel like a very 2027 problem.

The side profile shows one of the bigger design changes. BMW integrates the new Winglet door handles into the B- and C-pillars in high-gloss black, which leaves the doors looking unusually smooth. Hidden window seals help the glass and paint surfaces meet more cleanly. The roofline slopes gently, but BMW avoids turning the X5 into a coupe-like SUV. It still reads as a practical two-box premium SUV, just with fewer hard breaks in the sheetmetal.

Soft Close doors come standard. Buyers who choose the Luxury Package can add power-operated doors that open or close with a touch of the exterior handle, interior buttons, the My BMW App, voice commands, or the vehicle’s infotainment interface. The driver can also close the door by pressing the brake pedal after getting in. Radar sensors in the side skirts, front, and rear help the doors avoid obstacles, cyclists, and other nearby road users. Owners can still operate the doors manually with light effort because each door uses an integrated servo motor.

At the rear, the fifth-generation BMW X5 gets broad shoulders, a deeply inset greenhouse, a body-color bumper, matte-black trim, and a darker lower section. Slim rear lamps stretch nearly across the tailgate and repeat the double-X idea from the front. The overall rear treatment looks busier than the side view, but it gives the 2027 X5 recognizable nighttime identity.

M Sport Packages Add Back Some Edge

The standard shape may look more reserved, but BMW still offers two M Sport routes for buyers who want more visual aggression. The M Sport Package adds high-gloss Shadowline M roof rails, the M Aerodynamics Package, M-specific door-sill plates, an M light carpet, body-color side skirts, and a front-end treatment with two horizontal lighting lines. It also brings Adaptive M Suspension, 21-inch wheels, and M Sport brakes with Dark Blue metallic calipers.

Inside, the M Sport Package unlocks Black and Atlas Grey sport seats in Veganza and Alcantara. It also gives the cabin a more traditional BMW performance flavor without turning the X5 into an M car.

The M Sport Package Professional goes further. It adds 22-inch Jet Black Trigon wheels, M Sport brakes with Red metallic calipers and a monochrome M logo, a darker M Shadowline version of the illuminated kidney, black high-gloss mirror caps, a more aggressive M-specific front bumper with extra black trim, M-specific door sills, M seat belts, and an M leather steering wheel. This package probably will suit buyers who think the standard 2027 BMW X5 looks too calm.

BMW offers 11 exterior colors for the new X5, including five shades new to the model. Space Silver metallic, Grey Pine metallic, and Vancouver Green metallic arrive at launch, while BMW Individual Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic and BMW Individual Frozen Space Silver metallic follow from late 2026. Special-order BMW Individual paint finishes become available from April 2027.

The wheel menu grows too. The 2027 BMW X5 comes standard with 21-inch light-alloy wheels and mixed-size tires, 255 millimeters wide in front and 285 millimeters wide at the rear. Buyers can move to 22-inch wheels with either all-season or summer tires. For the first time on an X5, BMW will offer 23-inch wheels. They should help the stance, but they also raise the usual questions about ride quality and replacement cost.

A Cabin Built Around Neue Klasse Ideas

The interior marks a bigger break from the outgoing X5 than the exterior does. BMW uses its Neue Klasse display and operating concept here, giving the 2027 BMW X5 a dashboard that looks lower, cleaner, and more screen-oriented. The seating position remains elevated, but the dashboard no longer relies on a traditional cluster directly in front of the driver.

BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X anchors the cabin. A wide BMW Panoramic Vision display projects information across the base of the windshield. Driving information sits to the left in the driver’s field of view, while the center and passenger-side portions can show customizable widgets. A standard BMW 3D Head-Up Display sits above that windshield-wide information band and projects navigation and driver-assistance information into the driver’s sightline.

The main touch interface is a 17.9-inch free-cut Central Display positioned close to the steering wheel. BMW uses matrix backlighting for clarity and QuickSelect menu logic to reduce the number of buried submenus. Drivers can drag widgets from the Central Display to the Panoramic Vision area, with up to six available for quick access. There are a lot of screen real estate here, and that will not be everyone’s idea of luxury.

BMW Operating System X runs on an Android Open Source Project foundation and supports over-the-air updates, post-purchase upgrades, and deeper personalization. Up to seven people can sign in with a BMW ID, and each profile can carry its own display layout, preferred colors, vehicle settings, and profile picture. Owners can even use the My BMW App to set their own background image for the Central Display, with the interface colors adjusting around that image.

BMW keeps My Modes in the new X5, including Personal, Sport, Efficient, and Silent. These modes change display behavior, lighting, and vehicle settings. The cabin also uses a three-dimensional backlit accent strip that runs below the instrument panel and continues into the doors. When inactive, it appears in Dark Silver as standard or optional Silver Bronze. When active, it changes color and brightness based on user preference, My Mode, and time of day.

The new multifunction steering wheel follows BMW’s so-called shy-tech approach. Buttons illuminate only when their associated functions are available. Driver-assistance and parking controls sit on the left side; media, phone, and infotainment controls sit on the right. The controls provide haptic feedback, which should help drivers use them without staring down. The standard wheel uses a self-supporting structure, a slightly flattened shape, and no horizontal spokes.

BMW offers several steering wheel designs. The M Sport Package brings a sport steering wheel with a vertical spoke, an M badge, and black Veganza trim with Dark Silver or Silver Bronze accents. The BMW Individual steering wheel comes in Smoke White with a Dark Silver accent bar and pairs with the BMW Individual Smoke White Merino Leather cabin. The M Sport Package Professional adds an M leather wheel with sportier geometry, no vertical spoke, and a black 12-o’clock marker.

Materials Move Beyond The Usual Wood And Metal

BMW makes an interesting material choice with optional genuine slate trim. The BMW Individual Clear & Bold interior application uses a thin layer of real slate shaped to fit the center console control panel. Touch controls integrated into that surface operate functions such as the parking brake, hazard lights, and rear-window defroster. It is a small detail, but it gives the X5 cabin a less predictable premium feel.

The same Clear & Bold option also adds crystal glass elements for the gear selector, volume controls, and seat-adjustment controls. Black high-gloss trim comes standard. Depending on interior specification, BMW adds X-shaped quilting on the doors and instrument-panel facing, while cleaner seat quilting keeps the cabin from feeling too busy.

The center console includes two cup holders, two USB-C ports, and an Alcantara Anthracite smartphone tray with inductive charging and a magnetic holder. That tray sounds simple, but small storage and phone-placement details matter in a family-size premium SUV.

Standard seats are heated sport seats with extra cushioning in the seat and backrest areas. They include strong side support, broad adjustment ranges, manual seat-depth and head-restraint adjustment, and driver lumbar support. Veganza upholstery comes standard in Black or Copper Brown, and the instrument panel and door trims use Black Veganza when the X5 has sport seats. With the M Sport Package, buyers can choose the Black and Atlas Grey Veganza and Alcantara interior with M logos in the seatbacks.

Multifunction seats come through the Luxury Seating Package or Climate Package. They add ventilation, massage, electric seat-depth adjustment, electric head-restraint-height adjustment, dedicated cushion and backrest ventilation, and four-way lumbar support. Veganza multifunction seats come in Black, Copper Brown, or Silverstone. With the M Sport or M Sport Professional packages, the Black and Atlas Grey M interior remains available.

BMW Individual Merino Leather requires the multifunction seats and comes in Black, Adelaide Grey, Smoke White, Tartufo, and Vintage Coffee. The Vintage Coffee finish aims for a richer aged look. Merino-equipped cabins add Alcantara to the instrument panel, front door trim, and Anthracite headliner. The seat surfaces combine Merino leather with Alcantara side inserts, giving the cabin a matte and gloss contrast.

Rear passengers benefit from a 2.4-inch longer wheelbase, increased knee room, and a rear-seat backrest angle that sits two degrees flatter. The Isofix child-seat mounts match the selected Veganza or Merino upholstery, which shows BMW paid attention to the details families actually touch. The rear seat splits 40:20:40 and includes a through-loading function. The center armrest contains two cup holders that can double as a smartphone tray. With BMW Individual Merino Leather, the rear seats also receive matching neck cushions and an Alcantara center-armrest cushion.

Comfort Features Lean Luxury, Not Minimalist

The 2027 BMW X5 comes standard with a large panoramic glass sunroof with an opening front section. BMW says the two glass panels cover about 28 square feet, which should make the cabin feel notably open. Standard 2.5-zone climate control uses slim front vents integrated into the instrument panel, and drivers adjust airflow through the Central Display.

The optional Climate Package adds four-zone climate control, a rear touchscreen, extra rear vents, ventilated multifunction front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated armrests. The electric BMW iX5 uses a specific climate system with a high-efficiency heat pump to reduce the energy penalty from cabin heating and cooling.

Audio starts with a 280-watt HiFi System Professional using 12 speakers. The optional Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System raises output to as much as 775 watts and adds up to 18 speakers with metal covers, a seven-band equalizer, and Dolby Atmos support. For buyers who stream spatial audio or video content inside the vehicle, Dolby Atmos gives the X5 a more theater-like soundstage.

The optional BMW Passenger Screen appears in the X5 for the first time. This 14.6-inch full-HD display sits beside the Central Display and gives the front passenger access to streaming video, TV content, games, music, and other entertainment through BMW’s digital ecosystem. The passenger can also use the interior camera for video conferencing while traveling. A BMW ID login is not required for basic use.

BMW includes BMW Digital Premium for four years at no extra charge when buyers choose the Passenger Screen. That package supplies the data needed for entertainment on the Passenger Screen and Central Display. The Passenger Screen can keep playing while the vehicle moves, but an interior camera watches for driver distraction and darkens the screen if the driver looks at it too much. When no passenger sits up front, the screen switches to a reduced mode and blends into the active My Mode and ambient lighting theme.

The Digital Layer Gets Bigger

BMW’s latest infotainment strategy does not stop at navigation and music. BMW Operating System X supports a wider app catalog through the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. The Video app, powered by TiVo, brings news, live streaming, and on-demand platforms. When parked, passengers can watch video on the Central Display and Passenger Screen; while driving, video remains available only on the Passenger Screen.

BMW also includes AirConsole gaming support. Occupants can use smartphones as controllers for multiplayer games, including UNO Car Party and Hot Wheels Xtreme Overdrive from Mattel. Selected games can also work with Bluetooth controllers from traditional gaming consoles. BMW says the ConnectedDrive Store already carries more than 60 apps worldwide across music, entertainment, gaming, news, travel, and local information.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant gains Amazon Alexa+ AI technology. Drivers can still call it up with the usual voice prompt or a steering-wheel button, but the system now uses large-language-model capability for more natural back-and-forth interaction. It can handle windows, climate settings, seat comfort, phone calls, entertainment, app menus, navigation entries, and certain vehicle functions. If the owner links an Amazon account, it can access music, news, external knowledge, cloud services, and other content.

The assistant can also make proactive suggestions based on use patterns, the driving situation, interior sensing, and environmental context. A new Routines function lets owners teach the vehicle repeated actions. For example, the system can learn to activate maximum cooling and seat ventilation when outside temperature rises above 80 degrees, or apply heated seats, steering-wheel heat, and defrost settings in winter. It sounds useful, though the best version of this technology will need to stay quiet until it has something genuinely helpful to say.

BMW Digital Premium adds more than entertainment data. Its Security Assistant sends push notifications through the My BMW App after attempted thefts or parking bumps. BMW Drive Recorder can make exterior footage available after an accident and export it to a phone. Anti-theft and parking-collision recording can also capture automatic video. Remote Inside and Remote 3D View let owners check the cabin and nearby surroundings through the app.

Digital Premium also expands BMW Maps with additional real-time traffic information, satellite views, 3D building models, proactive route tips, detailed parking and point-of-interest information, and more realistic lane guidance in complex city layouts. A 5G-ready telematics system supports streaming and connected services. BMW’s digital approach clearly gives owners more capability, but it also moves more of the ownership experience into packages and future upgrades.

The My BMW App gains deeper control for the new X5. Owners can operate windows remotely in real time, precondition the cabin, adjust temperature, activate seat heating, and set charging windows for the BMW iX5 and X5 50e plug-in hybrid. Passengers can scan a QR code to connect their own My BMW App to the vehicle and control music, temperature, lighting, and navigation. Digital Key remote functions on iOS can work with Siri and iPhone or Apple Watch shortcuts.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. BMW integrates phone-projected metadata, including media information and route instructions, into BMW Panoramic Vision and the 3D Head-Up Display when appropriate. The Central Display keeps QuickSelect widgets available while embedding smartphone content into the free-cut display shape, and a menu-bar icon lets users switch CarPlay or Android Auto into full-screen mode.

BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades allow owners to add certain functions after purchase. BMW offers free trials for these upgrades, then lets customers book them for the vehicle’s lifetime, one year, or one month, depending on the feature. Owners can buy them through a browser, the My BMW App, or the vehicle itself. Over-the-air software updates keep BMW Operating System X current, and BMW says the update process can run automatically if the owner chooses.

Keys, Doors, And The New Welcome Routine

BMW Digital Key Plus lets compatible smartphones and smartwatches act as the key. It uses ultra-wideband and Bluetooth to locate the user closely and securely, with access certification through the Car Connectivity Consortium. Owners can share a digital key through a messaging app and assign different roles or permissions. Wallet-based functions also support remote tailgate operation.

With Digital Key Plus active, the 2027 BMW X5 starts its welcome routine as the driver approaches. The exterior lighting animation begins, the Winglet door handle can unlock the vehicle with a touch, and the cabin greets the driver through Panoramic Vision and the Central Display. The driver can leave the phone in a pocket from approach through drive-off. When the driver walks away, a goodbye animation confirms locking.

The welcome sequence can also move the driver’s seat and steering column to ease entry. This detail pairs well with the optional powered doors and standard Soft Close system. It also shows where the X5 is headed as a luxury product: more automation, more recognition, more small motions that happen before the driver asks.

The First Electric X5 Gets Serious Numbers

The 2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive marks the first battery-electric X5. It uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, known as Gen6, and shares a technology path with the new BMW iX3. The iX5 uses an 800-volt electrical architecture, a standard NACS charging port, bidirectional charging capability, and a newly designed high-voltage battery with cylindrical cells.

BMW says the electric X5 uses 46-millimeter-diameter cylindrical lithium-ion cells that stand 120 millimeters tall. They use the same chemistry as the 95-millimeter-tall cells used in the BMW iX3, but the taller format raises usable cell energy by almost 30 percent. Compared with BMW’s previous Gen5 prismatic cells, the new cylindrical cells improve energy density by about 20 percent.

The iX5 battery uses a cell-to-pack layout, meaning BMW integrates the cells directly into the pack without traditional modules. The net usable battery capacity is 144 kWh. BMW says this layout improves pack-level energy density while helping reduce weight and cost. A new in-house Energy Master unit sits directly on the battery and manages high-voltage electronics, power supply to the motors, onboard electrical systems, battery data, and safe operation.

The BMW iX5 60 xDrive uses one electric motor at each axle. Combined output reaches 570 horsepower and 593 pound-feet of torque. The rear axle serves as the primary drive axle and uses an electrically excited synchronous motor rated at 325 hp and 369 lb-ft. Because this motor does not rely on permanent magnets, BMW can adjust its magnetic field to the driving situation, reducing losses at low load and delivering stronger fields under high load.

The front axle uses an asynchronous motor rated at 245 hp and 225 lb-ft. This motor uses induction rather than permanent magnets or electrical excitation. It can switch off at lower loads without creating drag losses, allowing the iX5 to drive on rear-wheel power alone for better efficiency.

BMW estimates the 2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive will run from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and reach an electronically limited 130 mph. The estimated driving range reaches up to 435 miles based on BMW testing using EPA procedures. That number, if it holds through official certification, would give the electric X5 one of the stronger range claims among premium electric SUVs.

Charging numbers look just as ambitious. The iX5 can accept up to 460 kW at a DC fast charger. BMW says a 10 to 80 percent charge takes 22 minutes under ideal conditions, and a 10-minute session can add an estimated 170 miles of range. The 800-volt system also includes a switching matrix that lets the vehicle use 400-volt DC stations. AC charging comes standard at up to 15.4 kW.

Battery preconditioning can prepare the pack for faster charging. If BMW Maps actively guides the driver to a DC fast charger, the vehicle automatically heats or cools the battery. Drivers can also start preconditioning manually through the Central Display or My BMW App, which shows battery temperature status and remaining preparation time.

BMW Maps also supports charging-optimized route planning. If the iX5 cannot reach a destination on its current charge, the system builds a route with charging stops while considering preferred arrival charge levels and charging-station operators. BMW says the system can use AI from previous charging cycles to account for expected charging capacity, reliability, and exact station location. The charging flap can detect charging intent and open or close automatically.

Bidirectional charging comes standard on the BMW iX5. Vehicle-to-Load lets the SUV power electrical devices. Vehicle-to-Home can supply electricity to a home during an outage when the proper equipment is installed. Vehicle-to-Vehicle lets the iX5 provide power to another vehicle. These features give the iX5 more practical utility than a long-range EV that only takes electricity in.

The Gas X5 Keeps The Inline-Six Front And Center

The 2027 BMW X5 40 and X5 40 xDrive use BMW’s updated 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance. Output rises to 394 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 19 hp and 45 lb-ft over the previous torque figure of 383 lb-ft. BMW estimates a 0-to-60-mph time of 5.1 seconds, or 4.8 seconds with a 1-foot rollout. Top speed reaches up to 155 mph when properly equipped.

The updated B58 engine uses the Miller combustion cycle, which shortens intake-valve opening time to improve efficiency. BMW also revised the turbocharger, intake ports, combustion chambers, ignition system with active coils and integrated electronics, electric VANOS variable camshaft timing, and the exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head.

Switchable exhaust-side rocker arms can interrupt gas exchange during overrun, reducing drag torque by about two thirds and helping the 48-volt mild-hybrid system recover more braking energy. A dual-injection setup combines high-pressure injection with a low-pressure supply to the combustion chambers, improving flow through the intake ports and cylinders while helping reduce particulate buildup and CO2 emissions.

The 48-volt mild-hybrid system integrates its electric motor and power electronics into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. Acting as a crankshaft-mounted starter generator, it can add up to 17 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque during pullaway or acceleration. It also smooths Automatic Start/Stop operation. A 48-volt battery beneath the luggage compartment stores recovered energy and supplies the 12-volt electrical system through a voltage converter.

The X5 50e Plug-In Hybrid Still Makes A Strong Case

The 2027 BMW X5 50e xDrive pairs an updated inline-six engine with a synchronous electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The gasoline engine contributes 308 hp, while the electric motor produces 194 hp. Combined system output reaches 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.

The plug-in hybrid uses a fifth-generation lithium-ion battery mounted in the underbody with 26.5 kWh of usable capacity. BMW estimates the X5 50e xDrive can travel up to 44 miles on electric power, an improvement of about 15 percent from the previous generation. It can also drive up to 87 mph in electric mode.

Performance remains quick for a midsize luxury plug-in hybrid SUV. BMW estimates the X5 50e xDrive will run from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. For many U.S. owners, this version may land in the practical middle: enough electric range for many daily errands, no dependency on public fast charging, and full long-distance flexibility from the gasoline engine.

Chassis Hardware Stays Very BMW

BMW has not treated the 2027 X5 as only a technology platform. The chassis still uses a double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear axle. BMW adapts the setup to each drivetrain, adds wider tracks, fits mixed-size tires as standard, and increases body stiffness. A new acoustically decoupled steering setup and a new steering gear aim to improve both comfort and control.

Adaptive suspension comes standard, with electronically controlled dampers at each wheel. The X5 also keeps close to 50:50 weight distribution, depending on version. Drivers can adjust the suspension behavior through My Modes, moving from comfort-biased tuning to a more dynamic setting.

Gas and plug-in hybrid X5 models use tenth-generation Lateral Dynamics Management and near-actuator wheel-slip limitation. These systems coordinate agility-related functions, including the intelligent all-wheel-drive system, while stabilization and engine management continue through BMW’s specialized control units.

The electric BMW iX5 and future BMW iX5 Hydrogen go a step further with Neue Klasse driving-dynamics hardware. BMW calls the central control unit the Heart of Joy, and it works with BMW Dynamic Performance Control. It can manage drive output, braking, steering functions, charging, and recuperation in milliseconds. BMW says it reacts up to ten times faster than previous systems.

In the iX5, that faster control should help the electric SUV corner more consistently, reduce small corrective inputs, and extend regenerative braking into more situations, including deceleration all the way to a stop. BMW also says the system supports very smooth stopping because it can manage electric-motor braking precisely before conventional brakes step in.

Trailer Stability Control gets upgraded logic that can identify trailer sway earlier. Depending on equipment, the system can respond in different ways. On the electric BMW iX5, optional rear-wheel steering can help stabilize a trailer for the first time. If sway becomes more pronounced, all X5 versions can use braking intervention to help bring the vehicle and trailer back in line.

Air Suspension And Roll Control Add Range

BMW offers adaptive two-axle air suspension with automatic self-leveling. The system maintains the desired ride height regardless of load, preserving suspension travel when the X5 carries passengers or cargo. Drivers can choose Auto, High, or Low ride-height settings through the Air Suspension menu.

In Auto, the vehicle maintains its starting level up to about 87 mph, then lowers by 10 millimeters. Above 124 mph, or when the driver selects Sport or Sport Plus chassis settings through My Modes, it lowers another 10 millimeters to reduce aerodynamic drag and lower the center of gravity. High mode raises the X5 by 20 millimeters for extra ground clearance on rougher surfaces, obstacles, or steep driveways.

Low mode lowers the vehicle by 40 millimeters when parked to make loading and entry easier. BMW now lets drivers select the lowering function while the vehicle is still moving, after which the X5 lowers automatically when it stops. When restarted, it returns to Auto.

Adaptive Chassis Control Professional is available on the BMW iX5 and X5 50e xDrive. It uses active roll stabilization with a 48-volt electric motor at the center of each axle and active anti-roll bars. In corners, the system counters lateral forces and reduces body roll. In straight-line driving, it can decouple the anti-roll bars to improve ride comfort over uneven surfaces.

The system also supports an Active Roll Comfort function that can adjust body height on one side of the vehicle to reduce side-to-side body motion caused by bumps on only one side of the road. Paired with air suspension, it should let BMW use softer spring behavior without letting the body feel sloppy.

Integral Active Steering turns the rear wheels by up to 3.2 degrees. At low speeds, the rear wheels turn opposite the fronts to reduce the turning circle by about 2.5 feet. At higher speeds, they turn in the same direction as the fronts to improve lane-change stability and poise.

Driver Assistance Gets More Integrated

BMW describes its latest driver-assistance philosophy as Symbiotic Drive. The idea is not to remove the driver from the process but to let the driver and assistance systems work together without abrupt handoffs. When assistance is active, the driver can still accelerate, steer, or brake without automatically shutting the system off.

Driving Assistant Plus comes standard on the 2027 BMW X5. It can help control speed, maintain distance from the vehicle ahead, and keep the X5 centered in its lane when the driver requests it. The system can also adjust speed for detected limits and upcoming corners, turns, and roundabouts. The driver still must watch the road and remain ready to intervene.

Optional Highway Assistant allows hands-free driving on suitable limited-access highways at speeds up to 85 mph, as long as weather and traffic conditions allow it and the driver remains attentive. Active Lane Change with Eye Activation can suggest a lane change when the X5 approaches slower traffic. The driver confirms by looking toward the appropriate exterior mirror, after which the vehicle signals and changes lanes when conditions are safe.

Symbiotic Drive also shapes safety systems such as Lane Keeping Assistant. The vehicle interprets steering behavior and driver gaze to decide whether a lane departure appears intentional. It intervenes with warnings or steering help only when it detects risk and a lack of driver control or attention.

Standard active-safety features include Lane Keeping Assistant, Active Blind Spot Detection, Side Collision Protection, and Crossing Traffic Warning with Brake Intervention for situations such as turning into a road or backing out of a parking space. Emergency Brake Assistant with Evasion Assistant can apply maximum braking to help avoid frontal collisions and now can respond to wildlife crossing the road. Exit warning can delay door opening if a cyclist or other road user approaches from behind.

In the BMW iX5 and future iX5 Hydrogen, the automated-driving control system enables BMW Soft Stop when driver assistance is active. The vehicle uses precise electric-motor control to stop smoothly, reducing jerk and brake noise. BMW says regenerative braking can handle nearly all normal deceleration in everyday driving, with conventional brakes saved for emergency stops and more enthusiastic driving.

Parking Tech Becomes More Capable

Optional Parking Assistant Plus adds semi-automated parking support with AI-assisted space detection and maneuver planning. A redesigned surround visualization should make detected spaces easier to understand and select. The system provides 360-degree camera views, including curb, 3D, and car-wash perspectives.

Maneuver Assistant can record and repeat recurring driving maneuvers up to 600 feet. This could help with narrow driveways, tight garages, or awkward apartment parking areas. The optional Parking Assistant Professional adds Remote Control Parking and lets the owner control stored maneuvers from up to 15 feet away using the My BMW App.

BMW also allows certain driving and parking assistance functions to be activated later through the ConnectedDrive Store. That flexibility helps owners who change their minds after purchase, but it also continues the broader industry move toward features that may exist in the hardware but require a digital transaction to unlock.

Spartanburg Still Matters

The X5 remains one of BMW’s most important U.S.-built vehicles. The company says its U.S. business supports more than 120,000 jobs and contributes more than $43.3 billion annually to the U.S. economy.

That context matters because the 2027 BMW X5 is not a low-volume experiment. It is a core model built in a plant that carries a lot of weight for BMW’s global SUV strategy. The new iX5 also makes Spartanburg part of BMW’s electric-vehicle production story, not just its gas-SUV story.

A Familiar SUV With A New Operating System

The 2027 BMW X5 keeps the basic formula that made the model successful: midsize luxury SUV space, inline-six refinement, available all-wheel drive, and a chassis that still tries to feel like a BMW. What changes is the breadth. The same family now includes a 394-hp mild-hybrid gas model, a 483-hp plug-in hybrid with an estimated 44 miles of electric range, and a 570-hp electric iX5 with an estimated 435 miles of range.

The new design looks cleaner and less aggressive, maybe too sanitized for buyers who liked the old X5’s blunt confidence. The cabin takes a large step toward software-defined luxury, with Panoramic iDrive, Operating System X, AI voice assistance, a passenger screen, app-based entertainment, post-purchase upgrades, and deeper phone integration. Some of that will feel modern and useful. Some of it may feel like BMW asking owners to manage one more digital ecosystem.

Still, the fifth-generation BMW X5 does not read like a simple redesign. It reads like BMW using one of its safest nameplates to bridge eras. Gas buyers get a stronger inline-six. Plug-in hybrid buyers get more electric range. EV buyers finally get an X5-shaped electric BMW instead of having to move to a separate i-branded SUV. Hydrogen remains in the background, but BMW clearly wants room for that too. The 2027 X5 has a lot to carry, and it seems built with exactly that burden in mind.
