When BMW launched the BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible, it raised the bar in the premium compact class in terms of dynamic prowess, aesthetic appeal and emotional richness. And the new generation of the two models promises to build on this success when it is launched in July 2017. Rear-wheel drive (unique in the segment) and efficient drive systems link up to provide unbeatable sports performance, excellent ride comfort shares centre stage with razor-sharp dynamics, and emotional depth is combined with an air of elegance. All that remains is the choice of Coupe or Convertible.
The BMW 2 Series Coupe has been on the market since 2014, standing out alluringly from the rest of its segment with an overall concept featuring, in time-honoured BMW coupe style, a two-door body with classical three-box design, four seats and rear-wheel drive, plus engines and suspension tuned to deliver sporting responses. It is a recipe further enhanced by the everyday practicality of the 4,432-millimetre-long BMW 2 Series Coupe, which has a boot capacity of 390 litres.
Making its debut alongside the Coupe is the new BMW 2 Series Convertible, which has identical dimensions. Short overhangs, a long bonnet, a set-back passenger compartment, a long wheelbase and a wide track produce the classical proportions of a BMW convertible. The electrically operated fabric soft-top slips down into the body to create a boat-deck look and offers excellent acoustic comfort when closed thanks to additional insulation. Plus, it can be opened while on the move – at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph). The BMW 2 Series Coupe and 2 Series Convertible enjoy success around the world.
Since 2014 BMW has delivered more than 140,000 units of the 2 Series Coupe and 2 Series Convertible (as at the end of February 2017) to customers around the world. The 2 Series Coupe has accounted for the lion’s share of this figure, with around 93,000 units sold, while the Convertible – launched in 2015 – has notched up roughly 48,000 sales. One in three cars (2 Series Coupe: 32 per cent, 2 Series Convertible: 33 per cent) are delivered to customers in the USA, making it the single largest market for the two 2 Series models. Next up for the 2 Series Coupe are Great Britain (18 per cent) and Germany (12 per cent), while Germany (27 per cent) and Great Britain (13 per cent) are the most popular destinations for the 2 Series Convertible after the US. The cars are produced at BMW Plant Leipzig.
A low-slung silhouette, dynamically stretched lines with compact proportions and powerfully contoured surfaces accentuate the sporting credentials and elegance of both the BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible. And with the changing of the guard from outgoing model to new comes a new and more striking front end for both cars.
Twin headlights help ensure the front end sticks to the traditional BMW template. The BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible are now equipped with new bi-LED headlights as standard. The headlights are composed of a familiar silhouette: flat-bottomed headlight tubes encircled by daytime running light rings and a dynamic cropped look produced by the characteristic “eyebrow” design. The main headlights can also be specified in adaptive full-LED form as an option, their eye-catching light graphic strengthening the dynamic and technical impression created by the front end. The familiar twin-circular-headlight look has a hexagonal interpretation, creating an even more precise and modern appearance. The optional LED front foglamps set the seal on the new lighting design for the BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible.
The kidney grille on the new models is endowed with greater presence and brings extra visual breadth to the front end. The links between the headlights and the kidney grille, together with the light graphic, ensure the nose of the Coupe and Convertible projects a sportier impression. The outer air intakes in the three-section front end are now larger, while two horizontal bars emphasise the cars’ powerful stance on the road.
The rear of the BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible likewise cuts a wide and muscular figure. Its stylistic impact is reinforced by the singlepiece rear lights (LEDs as standard) with hallmark BMW L-shape, which extend well into the flanks.
Three new colours – a darker Mediterranean Blue and light Seaside Blue, plus the bold Sunset Orange – have been added to the pallet of exterior paint shades available for the Coupe and Convertible. This brings the number of exterior paint finishes customers can choose from to 12.
The range of light-alloy wheels has also been expanded. The 218i, 220i, 218d and 220d are fitted as standard with 16-inch wheels (Style 378), while 17-inch rims (Style 380) are the default specification for the 230i and 225d. The M240i gets 18-inch wheels (Style 436 M) as standard in either Orbit Grey or Ferric Grey.
Luxury Line and Sport Line cars enjoy fresh opportunity for individualisation, courtesy of the 17-inch 725 Sport/724 Luxury wheel variant. Style 719 M 18—inch wheels are a new addition to the line-up for M Sport cars, and come in Jet Black or Bicolour Jet Black. Both will also be available for the M240i. In all, customers can choose from 17 light-alloy wheel variants in 16-, 17- and 18-inch formats.
A completely redesigned instrument panel with an even more pronounced driver-focused layout, plus new materials that lend further substance to the upmarket and exclusive character of the BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible ensure the new model generation can be clearly distinguished from its predecessor inside as well as out.
The instrument panel’s makeover completely changes the overall impression created by the new BMW 2 Series cabin. There are now far fewer joins, giving the interior a roomier, calmer, more clean-cut appearance, at the same time as emphasising its width. And a host of other details also help to accentuate the elegant design. On Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport models, contrast stitching is used for the seams. The centre stack, which houses the control panels for the radio and air conditioning systems, has a high-gloss black finish that gives the main element nestled between the central display and transmission tunnel an even more exclusive and sophisticated feel. The cupholders located in the centre storage compartment can be concealed by means of a sliding lid, while the window switches in the doors now have chrome edging. Thanks to the barely discernible joins, the glove compartment blends seamlessly into the interior styling. The air conditioning system’s vents have also been redesigned to further enhance the impression of roominess inside the new BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible.
The model change brings with it additional interior appointment options. The basic model can be specified with new Anthracite cloth seat covers with Grey accenting, while Dakota leather seats in Cognac are optionally available for all models. Buyers of a BMW 2 Series Coupe or BMW 2 Series Convertible can choose from five upholstery fabrics for the seat covers, some of which are combined with leather or Alcantara. In addition, Sensatec seat upholstery in Black and Oyster is available for all model variants, and Sport Line trim also gains the option of Black with red contrast stitching. The range is completed by seven different leather designs. Aluminium interior trim strips, Fineline wood trim and high-gloss black panels with accent strips in Chrome provide plenty of scope for customisation.
An extensive line-up of three-, four- and six-cylinder engines is available for the BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible, producing outputs from 100 kW/136 hp to 250 kW/340 hp (fuel consumption combined: 8.3 – 3.8 l/100 km [34.0 – 74.3 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 189 – 101 g/km)*. All the petrol and diesel engines are from the latest BMW EfficientDynamics engine family and feature BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. In addition to a basic concept that is inherently more efficient, all the diesel engines feature new turbocharger technology and enhanced common-rail direct injection systems.
BMW 2 Series Coupe customers can choose from nine engine options, including five petrol variants. The three-cylinder unit earmarked for the 218i develops 100 kW/136 hp (fuel consumption combined: 5.6 – 5.1 l/100 km [50.4 – 55.4 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 130 – 118 g/km)*. And the four-cylinder engines offer 135 kW/184 hp in the 220i (fuel consumption combined: 5.9 – 5.5 l/100 km [47.9 – 51.4 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 136 – 127 g/km)* or 185 kW/252 hp in the 230i (fuel consumption combined: 5.9 – 5.7 l/100 km [47.9 – 49.6 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 134 – 131 g/km)*. And then there is the six-cylinder engine powering the BMW M240i M Performance model. This turbocharged straight-six generates 250 kW/340 hp and has combined fuel consumption of 7.8 – 7.1 l/100 km [36.2 – 39.8 mpg imp]. CO2 emissions are 179 – 163 g/km*. The BMW M240i xDrive all-wheeldrive model returns combined fuel consumption of 7.4 l/100 km [38.2 mpg imp] and CO2 emissions of 169 g/km*.
Diesel variants of the BMW 2 Series Coupe come in 218d, 220d/220d xDrive and 225d forms. Outputs stretch from 110 kW/150 hp via 140 kW/190 hp to 165 kW/224 hp (fuel consumption combined: 4.7 – 3.8 l/100 km [60.1 – 74.3 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 124 – 101 g/km)*. The BMW 2 Series Convertible can be ordered with a total of eight different engine variants. They include the three-cylinder petrol unit in the 218i with 100 kW/136 hp and the four-cylinder options in the 220i and 230i developing 135 kW/184 hp and 185 kW/252 hp. Combined fuel consumption comes in at 6.8 – 5.3 l/100 km [41.5 – 53.3 mpg imp], with combined CO2 emissions of 155 – 124 g/km*. The Convertible is also available in extra-sporty BMW M Performance trim. The M240i/M240i xDrive with 250 kW/340 hp has combined fuel economy of 8.3 – 7.4 l/100 km [34.0 – 38.1 mpg imp] and CO2 emissions of 189–169 g/km*. The diesel line-up is made up of the 218d with 110 kW/150 hp, the 140 kW/190 hp 220d and the 225d producing 165 kW/224 hp (fuel consumption combined: 4.7 – 4.1 l/100 km [60.1 – 68.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 124 – 108 g/km)*.
Depending on the engine under the bonnet, the BMW 2 Series Coupe will be fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, eight-speed Steptronic transmission or eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. The BMW 220i, BMW 230i and BMW 220d xDrive Coupe are offered exclusively with the super-efficient eight-speed Steptronic transmission (eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission available as an option). The BMW M240i xDrive and BMW 225d come as standard with the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission in both Coupe and Convertible form. As well as laying on smooth automatic gear changes, the Steptronic Sport also allows drivers looking for a sportier drive to change gear manually using shift paddles next to the steering wheel. The other Convertible engine variants can all be specified with the six-speed manual gearbox, eight-speed Steptronic transmission or eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.
The BMW M240i and 220d Coupe can also be ordered with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive as an alternative to classical rear-wheel drive. The only variant of the BMW 2 Series Convertible to offer BMW xDrive and its AWD-specific benefits – such as optimum power transfer under acceleration and through corners, unbeatable driving safety and maximum traction in wintry conditions or on wet roads – is the M240i. Added to which, BMW xDrive also reduces understeer and oversteer through corners, enhancing the dynamic experience.
The BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible feature sophisticated suspension technology, including a double-joint spring strut front axle with anti-roll bars, plus a five-link rear axle. Large sections of the cars’ suspension are made of aluminium. A low centre of gravity, wide track and almost perfect 50:50 weight distribution all play their part in delivering outstanding dynamics and handling properties – and they are backed up by energy-efficient and precise electromechanical power steering.
The new BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible come complete with various assistance systems, the latest-generation iDrive control technology and an extensive range of connectivity features to help the driver focus on the task at hand and enjoy the drive to the maximum.
The high-resolution 8.8-inch central display in the new BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible now comes in a touchscreen version if the optional Navigation system Professional is specified, thereby providing the driver with yet another way of operating various functions. Both models come equipped with the latest generation of the iDrive operating system as standard. The iDrive Touch Controller lets the driver easily access and operate a large number of vehicle, navigation and entertainment functions using just one hand. Destination addresses can also be simply written by hand and entered into the navigation system using the Controller’s built-in touchpad. In addition to these two control methods, there is also the intelligent voice control system, which is able to recognise instructions without the driver having to learn and use specific voice commands.
Thanks to the standard built-in SIM card in the BMW 2 Series, ConnectedDrive provides optimum connectivity and access to BMW services without having to rely on the customer’s smartphone. These include the Concierge Services, where personal assistants select destinations such as restaurants or hotels for the driver while en route, make reservations and then send the information directly to the vehicle’s navigation system, complete with all contact details. Online Entertainment gives BMW 2 Series occupants a choice of millions of music tracks and audio books, while RTTI (Real Time Traffic Information) finds a smart way around traffic jams. RTTI now also includes a hazard preview based on fleet information, meaning that in addition to the real-time traffic situation, the service also notifies drivers of dangerous situations – such as accidents or heavy rain – detected by other BMW vehicles. Anonymised sensor data is used for this purpose. Hazard reports and rain are shown on the map in the vehicle’s display, while a warning and message appear on the navigation map when approaching the location of the danger.
Plus, in selected cities in Germany and the USA, the On-Street Parking Information service uses the Navigation system Professional display to indicate the probability of finding an available roadside parking space. The all-encompassing digital concept BMW Connected seamlessly integrates the BMW 2 Series into the user’s digital life via touchpoints such as an iPhone, Apple Watch, Android smartphone or smartwatch. BMW Connected detects mobility-related information, such as the addresses contained in the appointments calendar, and transmits this automatically to the vehicle. The user then receives a message on their smartphone notifying them in advance of the ideal departure time based on real-time traffic information. In addition, places the user drives to regularly and personal mobility patterns are also stored automatically. This means that manually entering destination addresses in the navigation system is set to largely become a thing of the past. If navigation details such as the destination address and desired arrival time have already been set outside the vehicle on the user’s smartphone, the link between phone and car will allow BMW Connected to transfer the information seamlessly and make it available to the BMW navigation system. BMW Connected and the Remote Services allow BMW 2 Series drivers to stay in touch with their car at all times, no matter where they are. They can control the heating and ventilation, lock and unlock the doors and call up vehicle-related information, quickly and easily using their smartphone. And if they happen to forget where they parked their car, they can check its location on a map via BMW Connected. Alternatively, the vehicle’s horn or headlight flasher can be activated remotely in order to locate it in a large car park, for example. With the help of Alexa and Alexa-capable devices, BMW 2 Series drivers in Germany and the UK can even manage their appointments in the BMW Connected mobility agenda and operate vehicle functions by voice control from the comfort of their home.
The new BMW 2 Series Coupe and new BMW 2 Series Convertible offer the option of powering smartphones wirelessly by means of an inductive charging tray. Apple CarPlay is also available in conjunction with a BMW navigation system. Integrating the smartphone into the vehicle’s system environment allows the phone, together with the apps on it, to be operated via the screen in the car by means of the iDrive Controller, voice control or touch control (Navigation system Professional). The optional in-car WiFi hotspot, meanwhile, offers a high-speed mobile internet connection for up to ten devices.
For the first time, BMW now offers Microsoft Office 365 users a secure server connection for exchanging and editing emails, calendar entries and contact details in the BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible too, thanks to the car’s built-in Microsoft Exchange function.
When driving long distances or in heavy city centre traffic, assistance systems relieve the strain on the driver by assisting with routine tasks or taking intervening action if required. The list of assistance systems available for the BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible includes Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. This system enables the vehicle to automatically move along with the flow of traffic when travelling on the motorway all the way up to near its maximum speed, braking or accelerating itself to suit the traffic situation. It even brakes the vehicle to a stop if necessary. The system alerts the driver and then applies the brakes if it detects an obstacle and the driver fails to react. The Driving Assistant is also available as an option and comprises the Lane Departure Warning system and City Collision Mitigation, which applies the brakes automatically at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph) in response to an imminent collision with a car, motorcycle or pedestrian, for instance. The Parking Assistant, meanwhile, manoeuvres the car into parking spots that are either parallel or perpendicular to the road. Its ultrasonic sensors help to search for suitable spaces while travelling at up to 35 km/h (22 mph). The Proactive Driving Assistant is available in conjunction with the Navigation system Professional and encourages the driver to stop accelerating in good time ahead of corners, junctions, roundabouts and speed restrictions.
With BMW M240i/M240i xDrive Coupe and BMW M240i/M240i xDrive Convertible variants on offer, the latest generation of the 2 Series Coupe and Convertible once again makes it possible to enjoy sporty performance par excellence in both open-top and fixed-roof form. Both model versions serve up a whole-hearted brand of driving pleasure, as illustrated by their bespoke, streamlined body design. The range also comprises a powerful sports coupe in the shape of the BMW M2 Coupe, whose high-performance six-cylinder inline engine, rear-wheel-drive agility and lightweight-construction suspension combine to deliver the ultimate in driving pleasure.
The BMW M240i is powered by a three-litre straight-six engine complete with direct injection, M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology with twin-scroll turbocharging, fully variable valve timing (VALVETRONIC) and Double- VANOS variable camshaft control. Both BMW M Performance models leave the factory shod with highperformance mixed-size tyres as standard, with dimensions of 225/40 at the front and 245/35 at the rear. Boasting a high-performance six-cylinder in-line engine, rearwheel- drive agility, a lightweight M Sport suspension made from aluminium and extrovert styling, the new BMW M2 Coupe has everything it needs to deliver the last word in driving pleasure.
The new BMW M2 Coupe instantly stands out as a member of the BMW M family thanks to styling that leaves little doubt as to its breathtakingly dynamic performance credentials. Inspired by various models from BMW Motorsport history, the new BMW M2 Coupe wears its exceptional sporting prowess “on its sleeve”, helped by the visual impact of features such as a low-slung front apron with large air intakes, muscular flanks with trademark M side gills, 19- inch aluminium wheels in familiar M twin-spoke design and the wide, low-tothe- road rear end with M-specific twin-tailpipe exhaust. The three-litre straight-six under the bonnet of the new BMW M2 deploys cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology to generate 272 kW/370 hp at 6,500 rpm, laying down a marker in the high-performance compact sports car segment. The same applies to power delivery: peak torque of 465 Nm (343 lb-ft) can be briefly increased to a mighty 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) in overboost mode. The lightweight aluminium front and rear axles from the BMW M3/M4, forged 19-inch aluminium wheels with mixed-size tyres, M Servotronic steering with two settings and immensely powerful M compound brakes equip the new BMW M2 Coupe to move the game on once again in the compact highperformance sports car segment when it comes to driving dynamics.
