Unveiling the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Turbo AutoX Concept

In the realm of motor performance and power-to-weight ratio, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Turbo AutoX concept car leaps to the forefront. The AutoX concept integrates a 2.0L turbocharged engine alongside enhanced performance features to deliver nimble handling and horsepower, crafted specifically for the thrill of autocross racing.

Performance-Driven Design

With the vision of GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports, Jim Campbell, the AutoX concept aims to push the boundaries of Camaro’s capabilities. This dynamic machine marries a lightweight chassis with a selection of new performance elements, amplifying the turbocharged Camaro’s already impressive attributes.

The heart of this vehicle is the Chevrolet Performance suspension lowering kit. This component brings together more rigid springs and meticulously tuned dampers, reducing the ride height by approximately 0.75 inch (roughly 20mm). A "plus performance" handling kit enhances the car’s agility with larger stabilizer bars and rigid suspension links. Bolstering the chassis stiffness is a strut tower brace nestled under the hood. This combination of upgrades results in improved roll stiffness and sharper turn-in performance.

Wheels, Brakes, and Powertrain

The AutoX rides on 20-inch concept Chevrolet Accessories aluminum wheels, encased in Goodyear 285/35R20 performance tires. A Chevrolet Performance front brake kit, boasting six-piston calipers and 370mm, two-piece slotted rotors, ensures responsive stopping power.

The beating heart beneath the hood is the 2.0L turbo engine, equipped with a cold-air intake system and a calibration upgrade to its controller, optimized to provide performance across the rpm band. The turbocharger, capable of generating up to 20 pounds of boost, utilizes a twin-scroll design to maximize power and minimize turbo lag, delivering a broad powerband. To navigate the rpm range, the AutoX employs a six-speed manual transmission paired with a short-throw shifter, enabling swift gear changes.

Accentuating the vehicle's performance is a Chevrolet Performance exhaust system, featuring a polished 4-inch outlet, which not only gives a throatier exhaust note but also reduces backpressure by about 14 percent. An Active Noise Cancellation calibration update is provided for vehicles equipped with the Bose® stereo system.

Racing in Style

Beyond its track-prowess, the Camaro Turbo AutoX Concept doesn't compromise on its striking aesthetic. Its bodywork is coated in Shock Yellow, a bold hue that marks a vibrant departure from more traditional color schemes, coupled with Pearl Nickel hood stripes and satin Carbon Flash Metallic accents on the hood vents, rockers, and rear diffuser. The vented hood is a transplant from the Camaro SS, with the rear diffuser and rockers taken from a Chevrolet Accessories ground effects kit. The SS model also donates a front splitter, although modified for this particular concept.

Completing the exterior ensemble are a front tow hook, GoPro camera mount, export side marker lamps, and a debut accessory rear spoiler. The interior doesn't shy away from the racing spirit, presenting a mix of style and track-ready functionality. The cabin showcases a black, leather-trimmed interior, featuring a suede-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel, shift knob and boot, a carbon-fiber instrument panel insert, and a bolt-in harness bar for mounting a five-point safety harness.

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Turbo AutoX Concept is an embodiment of Chevrolet's dedication to integrating power and performance with a bold, race-ready aesthetic. Its advanced features and exciting innovations push the boundaries of autocross performance while maintaining a keen focus on driver experience.
